Kozlowski Prostate Centre, Vancouver General Hospital, Vancouver, BC, Canada, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, BC, Canada Introduction Changes in the amount of myelin water in spinal cord (SC) occur at the time of spinal cord injury and during the subsequent deterioration and recovery phases. Tracking the progression of myelin water fraction (MWF) can therefore be an important marker of SC pathology over time, and can be used to measure the success of potential SC therapies (e.g. drugs which aim to rebuild the myelin at the injury site [1]). In addition, measuring MWF may be important in tracking the progression of multiple sclerosis in the SC. MRI is a powerful tool in tracking myelin water because it allows serial in vivo measurements in the same subject over time. This preliminary work presents MR myelin water measurements in injured and control rat spinal cords.

Ex vivo myelin water and DTI measurements of SKP-SC transplanted cell therapy in contused rat spinal cord: correlation with histology
Introduction Schwann cells differentiated from skin-derived precursors (SKP-SCs) have been shown to promote histological and functional recovery in a contusion model of rat spinal cord injury [1]. Cellular bands of SKP-SCs bridge the lesion site which promote axon growth ensheathed by peripheral (Schwann cell) myelin of endogenous as well as transplant origins. In this work, we assess the myeli...
متن کاملHigh resolution myelin water imaging in rat spinal cord in vivo with actively decoupled implanted RF coil
Introduction Myelin water imaging has been successfully used to assess myelin content in human and animal CNS tissue [1,2]. It has been shown that myelin water fraction (MWF) [3] correlates well with the amount of myelin in a rat model of spinal cord injury (SCI) [2] and can therefore be an important marker of the cord pathology. Quantitative T2 measurements used in myelin water imaging require...
متن کاملIn vivo myelin water imaging in rat spinal cord
Introduction Measuring myelin content in a rat model of spinal cord injury (SCI) can be an important marker of the cord pathology and can be used to monitor potential SCI therapies. Myelin water imaging has been shown to measure myelin content in normal and diseased brain and spinal cord tissue [1, 2]. This technique was successfully applied in excised rat spinal cords [3], however the requirem...
متن کاملHigh resolution 3D myelin water imaging in excised rat spinal cord
Introduction Myelin water imaging has been successfully used to assess myelin content in human and animal CNS tissue [1,2]. It has been shown that fractional amounts of water trapped between myelin sheaths – the so called myelin water fraction (MWF) [3] correlates well with the amount of myelin in a rat model of spinal cord injury (SCI) [2] and can therefore be an important marker of the cord p...
متن کاملAnti-Inflammatory Effect of the Epigallocatechin Gallate Following Spinal Cord Trauma in Rat
Background: Spinal cord injury (SCI) stimulates an inflammatory reaction that causes substantial secondary damage inside the injured spinal tissue. The purpose of this study was to determine the anti-inflammatory effects of epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) on traumatized spinal cord. Methods: Rats were randomly divided into four groups of 12 rats each as follow: sham-operated group, trauma group...
